Rovinj is our first lengthy stop of the trip. We're spending 5 nights here before moving on to Venice. Happily, our room here is much nicer than the one in Opatija.
Rovinj is along the northermost part of the Croatian coast, on the Istrian peninsula. Itis still a working fishing town, although it is also very popular for tourists (and justifiably so). The harbor has tons of yachts, sailboats and the like, but it also has lots of fishing boats. They were mostly out of the harbor when we walked through, but I did catch one coming back in.
The old city was built around the church of St. Euphemia, which is at the top of the hill in the center.
This being the former Yugoslavia, the central square is named for Marshal Tito. It's a pretty place, with a fountain.
But, it also has a fairly Communist-looking sculpture nearby.
Here's a closeup of a part of the old town. For fun, try counting the number of satellite dishes in the picture.
We walked through the old town to get to the church. Note how the second picture is "artsy" (lens flare and everything).
I took a closeup of the church, but, honestly, it's not very interesting. Instead, I'll close with the view from the top of the hill.
For dinner, we had the seafood plate for two, which included 12 mussels, two prawns (shells fully intact), grilled calamari, and two whole bass. I'm getting better at getting food from a whole fish, but I have much to learn with the prawns. I'm not sure I got more than one bite from the two.
